Casino Tournaments and How They Work

An online casino tournament generally involves either blackjack or slot machines and you can participate in these events at most Microgaming, Playtech and Realtime Gaming powered casinos. Some of today’s online casino tournaments are free to sign up to (also known as freerolls) and others can have a buy-in fee ranging from as little as $/€/£1.00 up to usually no more than $/€/£50.00. Once you have paid to enter a tournament, you just have to wait for it to begin, so always make sure that you have enough time to play once you have paid your entrance fee.

With some online slot tournaments, you may only get to play on one slot machine for the duration of the tourney, but with other events, you might be able to play on any of the slots in the casino (any of the 5 reeled video slots with multiple paylines). Always read through the tournament details when signing up for one of these events.

With most Microgaming tourneys, you generally have X amount of time and X amount of chips and the idea is to try and make as much profit as possible within the allotted time. This tournament structure is also usually the same at most RTG powered casinos. At most Playtech casinos, you generally have much more time and you can earn points when playing on any 15-40 paylined slots. The average tournament time can last from just a few minutes up to in some cases as long as two weeks.

If you happen to crash out of the tournament early, you also normally have the chance to purchase ‘continues’ or ‘rebuys’. This will give you extra tournament chips and some more play time and the cost of a re-buy is likely to be as much as the original buy-in fee. This will all be explained to you in the tournament details area or somewhere in the main tournament lobby. Prizes will always be divided between the top finishing players and the person who accumulates the most tournament points will walk away with the largest prize.

You will also usually find that you can only sign up for an online casino tournament from within the downloadable version of the casino and NOT from the instant flash version of the casino. The great thing about freeroll slot tourneys is that you can play for real prizes, but you don’t need to have any cash in your account to register. Some tournaments can have as few as 10 participants involved and others can have more than 1000 players taking part from around the world. If you have a competitive streak, we can definitely recommend signing up for one of these exciting events.
